Sustainable Building Design Dashboard (Autodesk Insight)

Webinar-gif_slow-2

Project Goal: Assess and visualize carbon impacts in building design. With tools for measuring embodied and operational carbon in architectural design, Autodesk Insight helps architects visualize opportunities for carbon reduction and track impacts as their designs develop in Autodesk Revit.

My Role:

  • Principal experience designer responsible for every aspect of the design process on the Autodesk Insight team, from initial discovery to conceptual design to user testing to final BETA delivery.

Problems:
View Storyboard (Figma)

  • Building owners need to make sure project goals are on target in terms of budget, schedule, and sustainability goals.
  • Architects need to provide design options that are not only energy and cost efficient, but also produce the least amount of carbon emissions. They need to be able to share options to their clients in a way that helps them understand where there are trade-offs in order to make decisions on how to move projects through the phases of building design.
  • Architects need a tool that allows them to clearly see how well the design is meeting project target goals and be able to collaborate with engineers & stakeholders.

Solutions (New Autodesk Insight):

  • Autodesk Insight helps architects explore understand "tradeoffs" by exploring "what if" and "what matters" when choosing which materials to use for designing sustainable buildings with zero carbon emissions.
  • Users are able to upload their building designs created in Autodesk Revit and explore the totals of carbon emissions based on material choices using interactive filters, charts and dashboard controls.

Process:

  • Agile Continuous Discovery & Delivery:
    • Product Owner
    • Lead Experience Designer
    • Technical Lead
    • Front-end Developers
  • Discovery (research & user-flows):
    • Created user flows & narratives based on product owner's assumptions & experience in the industry.
    • Facilitated interviews to understand what customers need to know in order to design sustainable buildings & validated assumptions.
    • Identified user needs & mapped out user journey maps highlighting pain-points & key opportunities for improvements.
  • Explore/Define (ideas & wireframing):
    • Ideated & created concepts for future product vision near & long-term.
    • Shared concepts with customers for immediate feedback & refined ideas.
    • Collaborated with visual designers from design system team to create new components (interactive charts, graphics, & filters) needed for the dashboard.
  • Develop/Test:
    • Created clickable prototypes for more realistic simulated experience to get customer feedback.
  • Delivery:
    • Product Preview (BETA) released to customers in 2024.
